Deepness with Clearing

Dates: 2024.3.3-4.15

“Deepness with Clearing” takes its inspiration from the German philosopher Martin Heidegger’s concept of “Clearing” (German: Lichtung; English: Clearing). Heidegger first introduced the term in §28 of Being and Time. It refers to the illumination that belongs to Dasein (being-there)—the entity that understands “Being” and, through this understanding, reveals both itself and the world.

In a manner akin to the philosopher’s work, the artist’s task, in the sense of disclosing “Being,” is to devise a comprehensible space-time for light and shadow, stillness and movement, openness and closure. The exhibition title “Deepness with Clearing” carries a dual meaning: the character “深” (Deepness) also represents the city of Shenzhen—a place of profound vitality—while the title as a whole conveys a hopeful vision for both the artists and ISM Art Space: a future radiant, clear, and luminous.
