Artist Biography:

Ni Zhiqi (b. 1957, Shanghai, China).Ni Zhiqi is a significant figure in Chinese contemporary art. His artistic career began in the 1980s, when he first gained recognition through his Surrealist and Cubist paintings during the renowned ’85 New Wave movement.A pivotal turning point came with his studies in Belgium. At the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, he was profoundly influenced by Joseph Beuys’ concept that “everyone is an artist” and the challenging, tradition-defying atmosphere of European modern art. He began experimenting with found materials—shipping containers, eggshells, stools—creating the installation series The Rebirth of Mona Lisa (1993), which responded to the iconoclastic spirit of the time through a lens of “Eastern reincarnation.”Ni’s works have been widely exhibited in Asia and Europe, with major solo exhibitions at Pearl Lam Galleries, including Flâneur (2023–2024) and Retreat (2022). His career has also received broad social recognition: in 2014, his oil paintings were reproduced on commemorative stamps for the Singapore Presidential Charity Art Exhibition, making him the first Chinese artist to receive this honour. He has also led public art projects for prestigious architectural landmarks in Shanghai, including the Jin Mao Tower and the Waldorf Astoria.
