Light Density
Light Density

The world is fundamentally material. From a physical perspective, “low density” implies a refreshing clarity, a freedom akin to the blank spaces in poetry. Physically, low density means not being crowded—having more personal space. This naturally brings us to the primal instinct of low density: its resistance to alienation. In a high-density city, individuals easily become mere cogs in a vast machine, pushed forward mechanically, mindlessly, even ceasing to think. A low-density environment allows one to withdraw from this state of being perpetually “filled,” offering undisturbed moments of solitude. As the philosopher Schopenhauer put it: “One must choose either solitude or vulgarity.” In other words, low density provides the very ground for independent thought.
In terms of visual composition, the sense of breathing in low density echoes the concept of “blank space” (留白) in Chinese ink painting. The artists featured in this exhibition, “Low Density,” have constructed a space of artistic language that generates a sustained rhythm of breathing—both for themselves as creators, and for us as viewers. This creative intention conveys more than just the meaning of life, urban living, or the subtleties of solitude. It is not about accumulation or addition, but about how much room remains to fill the space between self and other with maximised freedom.
