Wei Zongyao 韦宗尧

Artist Biography：

Wei Zongyao (b. 1983, Shenyang)，Wei Zongyao received his Master’s degree in Oil Painting from the Luxun Academy of Fine Arts in 2009. He currently lives and works in Beijing.Wei’s abstract painting is profoundly inspired by Western Abstract Expressionism, while simultaneously resonating with the subtle echoes of Chinese ink tradition and philosophical thinking. His works possess both the visceral power of Willem de Kooning and the serene stillness of Mark Rothko. The accumulation, scraping, covering, and revealing of pigment leave traces of time on the canvas—lines, layers of colour, and luminosity radiate outward from the centre, constructing an internal order where void and substance give rise to each other, turning toward a more unnameable yet truer realm of the mind’s image. His practice spans painting and sculpture. His earlier works were extroverted in nature, expressing emotion through vigorous brushwork and vibrant splatters of colour. Over time, his work has turned increasingly introspective, presenting flatter, more richly layered surfaces that convey complex inner emotions with restraint. His works frequently feature motifs of flowers, light, and natural landscapes, establishing latent connections to life force, and incorporate the spirit of Pollock’s action painting, infused with a fascination for rhythm and cadence. He currently lives and works in Beijing.
