Niino Karuna 伽留那

Japan, b. 1993 · Lives and works in Tokyo

Artist Biography:

Niino Karuna (b. 1993),Niino Karuna graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Musashino Art University in Japan. She has actively participated in artistic activities across China and Japan over the years. In recent years, her practice has centred on ceramic tiles and ceramic paint as primary media. She transforms landscapes—not through topographical representation, but through movements of light and wind that approach pure sensation. In her works, landscape no longer serves a narrative function, but rather presents itself as an expression of emotion and feeling. Her images read like edited film stills, with information deliberately withheld to create a “temperature just out of reach”—tangible enough to hold one’s gaze, yet elusive enough to resist complete grasp. The subtle sheen of tile surfaces and the reflective film formed by layered ceramic paint amplify the fractures between colour fields. Even when the works are as intimate as palm-sized, these minute fissures produce a sense of estrangement that cannot be fully resolved.
