Yang Liming 杨黎明

China, b. 1975 · Lives and works in Beijing

Artist Biography:

Yang Liming (b. 1975, Sichuan, China)Yang Liming graduated from the Oil Painting Department of the Sichuan Normal University College of Art in 1999 with a Bachelor’s degree. Yang Liming’s artistic practice is akin to a sustained inner cultivation spanning over two decades. His paintings follow a kind of telepathic intuition—in his own words, “there is an inner voice, an inner energy that guides and pulls me forward.” His work has undergone a clear evolution through distinct series: from blue, to black, to red, and most recently to white. The early blue series is charged with passion and experimentation; this was followed by a phase of deep black, in which he delved into the depths of the psyche to clarify his cultural DNA. He then turned to dark reds and deep crimson, engaging in a struggle between abandon and discipline, risk and restraint. More recently, his work has entered an expansive white world, opening up toward infinite radiance and clarity.Yang has developed a distinctive abstract style defined by his signature “calligraphic curves,” rooted in his early training in calligraphy and a rhythmic sensibility drawn from music. By combining the Chinese brush with Western oil paint, he builds layer upon layer on the canvas—sometimes applying more than twenty coats of colour—to create deep, nuanced chromatic spaces. He currently lives and works in Beijing.
