Liu Xizi 刘溪子
Artist Biography:
Liu Xizi (b. 1992, Jinan, Shandong, China).Liu Xizi is a young artist known for her high-saturation candy-coloured palette and bird’s-eye-view compositions depicting contemporary consumer landscapes. She graduated from the First Studio of the Oil Painting Department at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2015, and received her Master’s degree from the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis in 2017. Liu’s artistic development has paralleled the rise of the internet and video games, and her practice is grounded in a solid foundation of both Chinese and Western academic training. Her work focuses on the landscapes of consumer society—supermarket shelves, amusement parks, factory floors—transformed into brilliantly coloured, luminous, dreamlike scenes. Her use of colour is influenced both by the sun-drenched environment of California and the chromatic vibrancy of digital screens; her employment of fluorescent hues lends her work a “quasi-fictional” surreal quality. In terms of perspective, she frequently employs bird’s-eye views, a compositional choice inspired in part by the “god’s-eye view” of video games.Liu maintains an objective, neutral stance toward consumerism—she believes that consumer society rolls forward like an immense wheel that envelops every individual, and that rather than critiquing it, one might as well “take it easy, join in, and experience it.” This non-judgemental position allows her work to retain a cool, observational distance beneath its dazzling surfaces. She also frequently shares her creative process and fitness routines on social media, influencing many young followers with her bright, healthy lifestyle. She currently lives and works between Beijing and Los Angeles.
