Artist Biography：

Xiao Wenjie (b. 1982, Hong Kong)，Xiao Wenjie studied at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute from 2002 to 2005. He currently lives and works in Beijing.Xiao speaks with a distinct blend of Hong Kong-accented Mandarin and Sichuan-accented Mandarin—and in his view, painting should not be confined to any notion of “good” or “bad.” His work, much like his accent, resists easy definition.Since 2022, the introduction of linear elements has broken through his earlier practice of pure colour-block accumulation, gradually coalescing into a central visual thread: the “Tuo”. For Xiao, “Tuo” is not a predetermined subject, but a fundamental way of looking at things. Its forms emerge through the repeated covering and adjusting of paint and tools; the viewer’s gaze wanders across highlights of varying colours, generating the image through a sustained drift of attention, synchronising with the artist’s labour. “Tuo” may be a completed result, or it may be an unfinished instant, still under observation. He currently lives and works in Beijing.
